Founded in 1884, Breitling has played an instrumental role in developing the modern wristwatch over the decades.
It’s been responsible for watchmaking milestones, like separating the stop/start function from resetting in 1923. This meant times could be recorded one after the other – a crucial development for sports competitions and calculating flight times.
It’s little surprise that the brand sees itself as the ‘partner of aviation’. Aircraft pioneers in the early 1930s recognised the precision and durability of Breitling pocket watches. Breitling’s ‘on-board chronographs’ went on to feature in early cockpits and then to equip RAF propeller-driven fighter planes in World War II.
In 1952, Breitling launched its Navitimer wristwatch that featured a circular slide rule to perform navigation-related calculations. Prized ever since by pilots and aviation enthusiasts, this watch is the oldest mechanical chronograph still in production.
Today Breitling’s range includes mechanical chronographs such as the Breitling Chronomat and sporty styles like the Breitling Avenger – both with the brand’s signature full chronometer and three sub–dials.
The collection also features more delicate timepieces like the Breitling Callistino.
